Archival photos of domesticated animals. Reinterpreting historical imagery, and shedding light on complex relationships

Current projects

I’ve been obsessed with finding old, archival photos of domesticated animals. I dig through dusty archives, searching for vintage snaps of animals hanging out with their humans, whether it’s a 1900s farmer and his trusty horse or a 1950s family with their posh pets.

I’m all about remixing these old images to explore how our relationships with animals have evolved over time. It’s more than just a trip down memory lane; I want to highlight the unspoken stories behind these connections. Every photo I pick tells a piece of history and helps us rethink how we see our furry and feathered friends today.

Artistic Practice

Evelyn Hartman is a contemporary visual artist whose work critically examines the evolving dynamics between humans and domesticated animals. With a focus on archival photography, Hartman’s project, "Domestic Echoes," curates and reinterprets historical images to shed light on these complex relationships. By meticulously selecting photographs from the 19th to mid-20th centuries, she aims to highlight the profound and often overlooked narratives within our shared history. Hartman’s innovative approach blends historical insight with artistic expression, inviting viewers to reflect on the significance of these bonds and their impact on contemporary perceptions of animal companionship.
